School Updates

  • Important School COVID-19 Policy Updates Effective March 7th

    Dear Wings families,

I am pleased to confirm that we continue to see low COVID-19 rates, and therefore can ease some COVID-19 protocols in our NYC public schools. This is a huge achievement and a milestone in the battle against COVID-19. In order to maintain the safety of all staff and students, we will continue to maintain increased ventilation, the daily health screening form, and COVID-19 home test kit distribution. Here is what’s changing effective March 7 and what will remain the same:

    Face Coverings

NEW: Effective March 7, face coverings will become optional, indoors and outdoors, on NYC public school grounds and on school buses, for all K-12 students and staff with a few exceptions. Please note that while wearing a face covering will no longer be required, anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so; face coverings will continue to be available through the school’s custodian engineer. Face coverings are still required or recommended in the following scenarios:

    Face coverings are required

Face coverings after return from 5-day isolation: Anyone returning on Day 6 after a positive COVID-19 diagnosis or after having COVID-19 symptoms without testing is still required to wear a well-fitting mask at all times on school property through Day 10.

Face coverings for Early Childhood programs: The indoor mask mandate is still active for LYFE, EarlyLearn (Infants & Toddlers), 3-K, Pre-K, and 4410 classrooms. Children two years old and older, and all staff in these classrooms, must continue to follow the same face covering requirements whether they are in a district school, CBO, or home-based program. Since children under the age of five are not yet eligible to receive the vaccine, face coverings remain our strongest defense against COVID-19 for early childhood populations.

Face coverings in medical rooms/nurses’ offices: Wearing a face covering is still required in medical rooms/nurses’ offices, as well as in School Based Health Centers. Nurses will have masks on hand for anyone entering who needs one.

    Face coverings are strongly recommended

Face coverings following exposure: It is strongly recommended that face coverings be worn when an individual has been exposed or potentially exposed to COVID-19 (in the same room for 15 minutes or longer with a person who tested positive for COVID-19). This face covering should be well-fitting and should be worn for 10 days after the known exposure.

    Social Distancing

NEW: There are no requirements for social distancing in public spaces, including classrooms, cafeterias and auditoriums, unless the person is returning from isolation. As per NYS guidance, those that are required to still wear face coverings due to returning from isolation should distance when they have to remove their mask for eating.

    Visitor Policy

NEW: A face covering is now optional for visitors.

All visitors wishing to enter DOE school buildings must continue to show proof of having at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, show identification, and complete the daily health screening form.

Reporting Cases to the Situation Room

Should a student or staff member feel ill during the day or test positive for COVID-19, the protocols and procedures remain the same. Schools will continue to report positive cases to the Situation Room.

    Student Vaccine Requirements

High-risk extracurricular activities will still require participants to be fully vaccinated. High-risk sports include football, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, lacrosse (boys), stunt, and rugby. High-risk extra-curricular activities include chorus, musical theater, dance/dance team, band/orchestra, marching band, and cheerleading/step teams/flag team.

Any student attending a dance or prom must be fully vaccinated.

  • Family Letter | Home Test Kit Distribution | Vegan Fridays

    Family Letter

The family letter (along with translations) which outlines the updated COVID health and safety policies shared in my previous email below is now available on the Messages for Families page. Thank you for sharing this letter with your families as soon as possible.

Continuation of Home Test Kit Distribution

Thanks also for your questions about the policy updates. Below are some clarifications in response to frequently asked questions this week. Please keep the questions coming!

    1. Any student who exhibits COVID-like symptoms at school or has been exposed to COVID-19 in a classroom setting should continue to receive home test kit for use at home.
    2. In addition, schools should continue to distribute a home test kit (2 tests) once a week to all staff members until further notice. It is recommended that the staff member use the first test on Monday and the second test on Friday. Should a staff member need an additional test kit due to extenuating circumstances, the staff member should request one from the Principal. Staff should continue to receive one KN95 mask per week upon request.
    3. As a friendly reminder, if an individual is exposed multiple times in a week, they need only one test kit (2 tests) for the week; the two tests are sufficient for multiple exposures.

Home Test Kits for Return from Midwinter Recess

Please note that for the week of February 14, schools should distribute home test kits to all staff on Monday, February 14 and again on Friday, February 18. This is to ensure staff have a second kit (2 tests) to use before they return from the midwinter recess on February 28. All students should receive home test kits (2 tests) on Friday, February 18, even if they were exposed earlier in the week. A family letter to accompany the February 18 distribution of test kits will be available on the Messages for Families page on February 11. Please share this letter with your families when it becomes available. We want to ensure that everyone (students and staff) has a test kit to use prior to returning from the midwinter recess. Students and staff can use the second kit to test on the evening of Saturday, February 26 and the evening of Sunday, February, 27 before returning on Monday, February 28. Please note that while use of the test kit is strongly encouraged, participation is voluntary, and staff and students are not required to show proof of a negative test result before being allowed to return to work and school.

    Vegan Fridays

I am excited to announce Vegan Fridays, beginning tomorrow, February 4

Building on the great success of Meatless Mondays, introduced in 2019, and Meatless Fridays, introduced in April 2021, Vegan Fridays will feature a vegan dish as the primary menu item. These menu items are plant based and made from scratch. Our team of chefs prepared these recipes utilizing high quality ingredients to ensure they would be tasty and satisfying. They meet all of the USDA child nutrition standards. Please note:

    • Vegan options are already offered in all schools on a daily basis, and milk is available as an option with every meal.
    • Further, additional options are always available, including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and hummus and pretzels, and students will continue to have non-vegan options available to them on Fridays.

When Should You Come to School for Your Classes?

In order to ensure social distancing, students who are coming to school for classes (blended learning) will be coming in smaller groups on different days. We will be using a six day cycle for classes, with students in school for two school days in a row, and learning from home for the next four school days. Students will be organized into three groups, A, B, and C. The cycle will be AA (Day 1 and 2), BB (Day 3 and 4), CC (Day 5 and 6). The A group comes for 2 days, then the B group for 2 days, and then the C group for 2 days.

The D group are the students who will be learning from home full time (remote).

All students will follow their schedules remotely for the first three days, from Wednesday to Friday, September 16th-18th. Students must use their Wings Nation email/account and follow their schedules each day. In school classes start on Monday, September 21st.

Students should click on the link below that corresponds to their grade to see which group they are assigned.  Students should look for their OSIS number (9 digit ID) and see if they are in A, B, or C. (Note this list may not show recent requests submitted for full time remote instruction.)
